ENCOURAGING PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN THE MONTEREY BAY AREA

Artist Profile: Marte Thompson

Born and raised in the woodlands of Western Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh, PA, I received my early art education in the Carnegie-Mellon Art Institute classes for gifted children, known as the "Tam O'Shanters" taught by the renowned art educator, Mr. Joseph Fitzpatrick. As a result, I learned to draw as a young child in one of the best natural history museums in the country. The Carnegie Museum housed one of the world's finest collection of dinosaur skeletons and ancient mammals, as well as Egyptian and early Classical Greek and Roman artifacts, and much more. My experiences in this museum developed my appreciation for art and natural history. I grew up believing that art and science were two sides of the same coin. I went on to major in art and anthropology in college, and to teach at the college level for many years. In addition to working in Silicon Valley as an illustrator, graphic designer, and web designer, I am pleased to be the webmaster for MBPAPA.
