ENCOURAGING PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN THE MONTEREY BAY AREA

Artist Profile: Daryl Hosick

The emotion that I attempt to transfer is the feeling of excitement, wonder and amazement that comes from closely observing nature - physically being in the natural environment and taking in all that is going on. And the best way to capture this feeling is to set up and paint outside - directly in front of the natural scene. The French term "en plein air" reflects this idea and simply means "in open air." Many of my paintings are created "en plein air." These paintings are relatively small in size because it is difficult to keep the wind from blowing away large canvases... By necessity, the larger works are created in the studio, but the paintings completed "en plein air" form the basis of these studio paintings... I am very active in groups and organizations promoting plein air painting including the Santa Cruz Oil painters and the Monterey Bay Plein Air PaintersAssociation, where I am a signature member and serve on the board of directors as the exhibit coordinator.
